FairTrade Project Sustainable Community Development
The company recognizes the importance of strengthening the local economy to build strong relationships with the community and foster long-term business partnerships, while also promoting sustainable business practices. The company has continuously implemented the Fair Trade product project in collaboration with the Sustainable Agriculture Community Enterprise Network in Namo, Khor Wang District, Yasothon Province. This project focuses on enhancing the potential and raising the standards of Thai farmers to meet European standards, from rice cultivation to rice milling. The aim is to empower Yasothon farmers to become producers of organic rice, supporting the purchase of certified organic rice that meets EU/NOP organic farming standards.
This project is an ongoing initiative that promotes the farming community through the Sustainable Agriculture Community Enterprise Network in Namo, which collaborates with the company to sell Fair Trade organic paddy rice at a price higher than the general market rate. The price premium earned from this difference will be directly reinvested to benefit the farmers or nearby communities. This process will be recorded and traceable in a transparent manner. In addition to supporting farmers, the project also helps boost the company’s economy by increasing sales of Fair Trade noodle products made from the organic paddy rice supplied by the network.
In 2024, the company is committed to continuously supporting the farming community by providing funding of 600,000 baht to expand the rice drying area from the original 1,400 square meters to an additional 1,616 square meters, totaling 3,016 square meters. This expansion will allow the facility to accommodate an additional 600-700 tons of paddy drying per year.
Project Performance of Fair Trade: Sustainable Community Development
- Increased sales of Fair Trade organic rice from 200 tons per year to approximately 350 tons per year, generating an additional 4.6 million Baht per year in revenue.
- Increased the capacity for drying Fair Trade organic paddy rice by 600-700 tons per year.
- Developed production standards for Fair Trade organic paddy rice.
- Expanded the rice drying area to 3,016 square meters (1.88 rai).
- The company increased sales to customers by approximately 14.22 million Baht per year.
- Created employment opportunities for farmer groups, with an increase of 2,300 jobs from 549 households, resulting in income distribution of no less than 400,000 – 600,000 Baht per year.
- The farmer groups have become stronger, with enhanced competitiveness and the ability to pass down farming skills from one generation to the next.
- The cultivation of organic rice uses chemicals in appropriate and safe amounts, promoting the use of biological fertilizers and biocontrol agents, which has led to a 100% reduction in the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. This has resulted in a cost reduction of 700 Baht per rai for farmers.
- The efficient use of resources has also improved. Previously, the process of drying paddy rice used machines or dryers, which had a drying cost of 1.60 Baht per kilogram (paddy rice). With the establishment of rice drying areas, energy consumption in the drying process can be reduced by using natural sun-drying methods, which also reduces the drying cost of paddy rice and generates income for the community or farmer groups. This results in a cost reduction of 0.60 Baht per kilogram (paddy rice).
